There's something about finding that special one off piece amongst lots of others in vintage shops that always brings a smile to my face. When it comes to vintage there's a lot of tatt out there, so choosing the right shop is vital! Beyond Retro, is extremely well known in London, filled with gorgeous 1960s rock n roll t-shirts, cut off denim and 'flower-power' dresses, all in all this place is a treasure!
Victoria Plum, is head of press and marketing for Beyond Retro, I caught up with her (looking fabulous in head to toe vintage) on her job and where she shops.
What do you do and why do you love your job?
I'm the Head of Press and Marketing for Beyond Retro, who are the UK's
largest vintage retailer with stores in Old Street, Soho, Dalston and Brighton
and then a further six stores in Sweden. I've an evangelical passion for
vintage and I've been a big fan and customer of Beyond Retro from the very
first day I moved to London 9 years ago, so you could pretty much say I have my
dream job! What that job entails covers a whole rainbow of activities, but in a
nutshell I look after our PR and marketing strategy so I manage our events
calendar, look after product placement, our brand image, oversee our social
media output and strategy plus manage our campaigns. We've recently we've
partnered with Save the Children for Christmas Jumper Day and opened our very
first pop-up shop, an entire store solely dedicated to Christmas jumpers in Old
Street station! As a brand we're lucky to work very closely with the industry's
top stylists, bloggers and fashion and lifestyle publications and I love seeing
how our vintage pieces get styled in such uniquely different ways; whether it's
Taylor Swift wearing one of our vintage swimsuits on the cover of Vogue or Vice
creating a shoot based on Dolly Parton's Dollywood featuring our sequinned
dresses, each piece is totally open to interpretation and it's one of the main
reasons I love vintage. There really is something quite magical and nostalgic
about the history behind each garment and I feel lucky to work with such
amazing products, it makes telling our story that bit more exciting.
Where is the best place to shop for vintage?
Aside from Beyond Retro, in London I love Lucy in Disguise for vibrantly
coloured and patterned statement dresses. One of my favourite online shops is
Waiste Vintage who are an online store specialising in gypsy-rose-inspired
vintage pieces, it's basically where Stevie Nicks would shop. In New York I go
to the Brooklyn Flea for amazing bargains, in Paris it's Coiffeur Vintage where
last year I bought the most incredible leopard print bomber jacket and in
Amsterdam it's the Waterlooplein Flea Market. In fact I'm a flea market
hound, no matter where I go in the world I always visit one!
5 items your can't live without?
My iPhone, a gold charm necklace I've been collecting charms on for 25
years and a Mac angled brow brush and eyeshadow in charcoal brown to fill my
eyebrows in!
